Historical Inspiration
This design is molded from an actual historical cross that we believe dates from circa 1200 AD. We have modified the bail to fit a modern chain, and thickened up the back of the cross for casting purposes, but the details on the front of this cross are identical to the original cross.
This cross was associated with Saint Nicholas. The historical Saint Nicholas, also called Nikolaos of Myra, was a 4th century saint and Greek Bishop of the Mediterranean port city of Myra (now in modern day Turkey). He is one of the most popular saints, especially for Eastern Catholics and the Orthodox. He was concerned for the welfare of children, and had a reputation for secret gift-giving, such as putting coins in the shoes of those who left them out for him. Thus he became the model for Santa Claus.
